Embracing Change: Why Growth Requires Letting Go as a Leader
Change is uncomfortable.
Not because it’s bad—but because it’s unknown.
We get used to routine. Schedules. Patterns. The normal. And for a while, that works. But life isn’t meant to stay there.
Progress doesn’t happen standing still.
It moves forward.
And when it does, it usually doesn’t ask if you’re ready.
There’s a quote that’s always stuck with me:
“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
The older I get, the more I realize—that’s not motivational.
It’s just true.
Recognizing Growth in Real Time
This past weekend, I saw that up close.
We spent it at a soccer tournament with both of my boys, and you can see the change happening in real time.
My oldest is 13, about to be 14 and moving into high school.
He was part of both goals his team scored this weekend, two perfectly placed crosses into the middle.
But what stood out more wasn’t just the play.
It was a conversation.
He told me he wants a summer job so he can invest more money.
Not spend it.
Invest it.
Behind the scenes, he’s been teaching himself how investing works, learning strategies, understanding risk, and thinking long-term.
That’s not routine anymore.
That’s growth.
My youngest is 11, moving into middle school.
His team won the tournament.
Hat trick in one game. Five assists across the weekend, including the game-winning assist in the championship.
But again, that’s not the part that sticks.
He saved his own money and bought training equipment because, in his words, “I’m ready to take the next step.”
He’s been training up with the older group.
And because of his attitude, effort, and consistency, more opportunities are starting to show up.
That’s what real growth looks like.
What Change Really Looks Like
Change isn’t loud.
It’s not announced.
It doesn’t come with a warning.
It just shows up one day, and you realize things aren’t the same anymore.
And it’s not just them.
This year, I started my consulting business.
I missed my first contract.
That stung.
But it also created something else.
Clarity.
I’m not waiting anymore.
There’s energy again. Momentum again.
Because forward is the only direction that works.
Leadership and Letting Go
As a leader, your job isn’t to keep things the same.
It’s to help people grow beyond the point where they need you.
That’s the goal of leadership.
And it’s uncomfortable.
When I was in my legislative role, if someone asked for more responsibility, I gave it to them.
And when I stepped down, watching someone step in and not miss a beat, that was the win.
But there’s a moment in leadership that no one really talks about.
The moment where you realize there’s nothing left for you to do.
No more direction. No more pep talks. No more adjustments.
Just support.
Just trust.
Just watching it play out.
And that is the hardest part of leadership.
Because real leadership development means letting go.
Why Change Is Necessary for Growth
Growth, real growth, requires change.
And change requires trust.
Trust in the process. Trust in your team. Trust in what you’ve built.
Whether it’s your team, your business, or your own life, change will feel uncomfortable.
But that discomfort is usually a signal, not a problem.
It means you’re moving forward.
Final Thought
Change doesn’t wait for you to feel ready.
It shows up, and asks if you’re willing.
